ISHS Acta Horticulturae 403: International Symposium on Cultivar Improvement of Horticultural Crops. Part 2: Fruit Crops

PRELIMINARY RESEARCH INTO BIOCHEMICAL CLASSIFICATION OF PLUM VARIETIES - GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF SUGAR SUBSTANCES IN THE FRUIT OF SEVERAL PLUM VARIETIES

Author:   F. Qiang
Abstract:
Currently, numerous chemical substances are used in many countries of the world for biochemical classification of fruit trees. But here in China few people are engaged in the study of biochemical classification of plants, especially, reports on biochemical classification of fruit trees are lacking.

China is the place of origin for the Chinese plum trees spreading widely across the country, with a myriad of plant varieties. However, no criteria are available so far for biochemical classification of these varieties.

In this experiment, gas chromatographic (GC) analysis method was used to determine the contents of various sugar substances in plum fruit. From the results it was found that the contents of various sugar substances in the fruit varied with different plum varieties, and the difference was significant. This led the author to believe that such a method can serve as a basis for biochemical classification of fruit trees.
