Abstract:
The authors have investigated, for 3 years, and conducted the pollination test on the pyrus communis L. cv. Flemish Beauty and other 3 pear varieties.
The results show that Flemish Beauty is to set fruit with both open-pollination and parthenocarpy; setting seedless fruit is not the result of stimulative parthenocarpy, caused by the stimulus of self-pollination, but vegetative parthenocarpy, which occurs without any pollination; Frost during blossom and/or any other factors disturbing open-pollination process including pollination, fertilization and seeds development may be the conditions resulting in setting some or all seedless fruits for Flemish Beauty during some years.
There is no parthenocarpy phenomenon observed for all 3 other pear varieties in the test.
