THE EFFECTS OF INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDIZATION IN PEAR BREEDING

Authors:   F. Chengquan, P. Fushen, J. Jingxian, C. Xinye, X. Hanying, W. Aili
Abstract:
In this paper the mew pear varieties (selections) bred by interspecific hybridization at our Institute during 1951–1979 were analyzed and studied. The results indicate: among 4 cultivated species such as Pyrus ussuriensis, P. bretschneideri, P. pyrifolia, and P. communis, the systematic relationship is more distant and the gene basis is evidently different; interspecific hybridization makes additive effect; not only new fine pear varieties and selections can be bred by interspecific hybridization, but also the new bred pear varieties (selections) have productive, hardy, disease-resistant and dwarf characteristics respectively; at the same time, interspecific hybridization has very great potentialities for breeding new crisp-fleshed and flavorous pear varieties.
