ISHS Acta Horticulturae 403: International Symposium on Cultivar Improvement of Horticultural Crops. Part 2: Fruit Crops

A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF SELECTED STRAINS OF THE CHINESE DWARF CHERRY TREE

Authors:   D. Junjie, Y. Huaiyi, C. jianwen, L. Liancheng
Abstract:
The chinese dwarf cherry [Cerasus humilis (Bge) Sok] belongs to the cherry genus in the rose family and is a native of china[1]. The trees height is from 0.3 m to 1.5 m, most of trees are 0.7 m. It may be said that it is smallest and most dwarf of fruit trees in the world up to now. The fruit can be eaten fresh or processed with a fresh smell and delicious taste. In addition the kernel is used for some medical uses, and is called "chinese bushcherry kernel" in chinese herbal medicine. [2.3] The nutritional value of the fruit is higher in carbohydrate, protein, vitamin C, with ferrous element and calcium being the highest content in all kinds of fruit (Fe 58 mg/100 g, Ca 360 mg/100 g). [4] Because the trees are very small, it is easy for them to form flower buds and offshoot (to tiller). They can be harvested as grass. It is also a type of tree which will hopefully be planted in dry areas because the tree's drought-resistance is very strong. Although the tree has grown wild for a long time, nobody has paid very much attention to it. Until now categorization has hardly been done. These have become an important limiting factor for artificial culture. We have been working all the selection of the tree varieties so as to provide good cultivars for planting.
