DOMESTICATION AND BREEDING OF INTRODUCED CHINESE CABBAGE IN TIBET

Authors:   D. wufeng, L. Sunkai
Abstract:
The high altitude, cold climate, great variation in temperature and long hour sunshine are characteristics of tibet which affected Chinese cabbage normal growth to a great extent. The leaf head of the cabbage was generally small and the rate of bolting was high before maturity, roughly about 85–100%. there was no record of Chinese cabbage cultivation before the 1950's.

Starting from 1952, Chinese scientists have successively introduced 60 varieties of early and medium maturity from inland. Ten varieties were screened out of these imported varieties for their less and late flower stalk development and coldness adaptation.

Thanks to decades' screening and domestication, theses selected varieties gradually adapted to the tibetan weather and the rate of bolting before maturity decreased steadily. As a result, the production and quality of the cabbage got improved tremendously. Besides, employing hybridization and mixed pollination technique, the research workers has successfully bred and released new varieties such as Rikeze No. 1, Zangbai No. 2 and Zangbai No. 12 which are very suitable to be grown in Tibet.
