Abstract:
Shihan 3A and Daqing 1A are two male sterile lines of Chinese Chive.
They were obtained by testcrossing and successive backcrossing the male sterile plants found in seed production field of Hanzhong Dongjiu with the corresponding male fertile plants.
Fertility examination showed that the percentage of male sterile plants and the degree of male degeneration were all 100% in five generations lines was also 10%. These male sterile lines belonged to pollen degeneration type and were characterized by their stable sterility, completely degenerated stamens, normally developed postil and normal seed productivity.
Hybrid seed yield per hectare was over 670 kilogrammes as ratio of maternal rows to paternal rows was 4 to 1. Fourteen crosses were made in 1990. Their seed were sown in open field in 1991. Leaf yields of all the combinations were higher than that of control, Hanzhong Dongjiu, raising range from 20.2% to 45.3%. In 1991, other 19 crosses were made.
The seeds were sown in a heated greenhouse and transplanted to a solar greenhouse in 1992. Leaf yields of all the combinations were higher than that of control, raising range from 27.7% to 74%. some of the hybrids have been used in Chinese chive cultivation.
