Abstract:
TMV-resistant and CMV-tolerant tomato materials were repeatedly detected and screened out by artificial inoculation method during the seedling stage.
The breeding of virus-resistant tomato cultivars were carried out.
It was proved that the resistance to TMV and CMV in these new cultivars was inheritable.
These new virus-resistant cultivars, including Zhongshu -No.4, -No.5, -No.6 and Zhongza -No. 4, have become popular and important tomato cultivars in P. R. China.
Good social and economic benefits have been achieved by the growing of these cultivars.
The diseases of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) caused by tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) were wide in distribution and caused serious crop losses in China, especially in 1970s.
In consideration of this problem, we collected domestic and overseas virus-resistant materials, studied the causal viruses and their strains, detected the resistance by artificial inoculation method during the seedling stage, screened out and bred virus-resistant materials and new cultivars.
The purpose of our study was to develop continuously new tomato cultivars to meet with the change of virus species and strains and the requirement of production.
