BREEDING OF GANFENG 3, A NEW EXTREMELY EARLY-MATURING CUCUMBER VARIETY |

| Abstract:
A new cucumber variety of extremely early maturity, Ganfeng 3, was bred by Vegetable Research Institute of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Science. Extremely early-maturity, high yield and good fruit quality are characteristic of the hybrids, and its fruits can be easily stored and transported. Besides, this hybrid is tolerant to bacterial leaf spot and Cucumber downy mildew (Pscudoperenospora cubensis), and is highly resistant to Fusarium wilt. When planted in plastic sheds in spring it matures early with a high and stable yield of about 124.5 tons/ha, which is 30% more than that of Changchu Mici and gives 7 500 to 15 000 yuan more income per ha. In the provincial and nationwide regional trials, it matured the earliest, its overall properties of maturity, yield, and diaease resistance was at the first place among all tested varieties. In 1992 it won the gold prize at the Scientific and Technological Commodity Fair of the First Silk Road Festival. This hybrid can be planted in large range of areas and is one of the best cucumber varieties in the country. With the extension of facility horticulture in recent years the ares of cucumber expanded year by year. Because of their susceptiveness to disease, some early maturing varieties, such as Anning Cigua and Changchun Mici, had been caused to a great damages, Our hybrid 828 has advantages of early maturity, high yield, disease resistance, and good commodity quality, however, its maturity is not so outstanding as expected,. Therefore we have bred a hybrid Ganfeng 3, which is extremely early maturing and highly resistant to Fusarium wilt and tolerant to bacterial leaf spot and Cucumber downy milew. | |
