STUDIES ON THE BIOLOGY OF PEPRODUCTION AND EMBRYOLOGY OF INBREEDINGS AND CROSSINGS IN THE COMMON CABBAGE

Authors:   L. Shixiong, S. Shuxing, Z. Chenghe
Abstract:
For this investigation, material from two self-incompatibility lines, JiZao Sheng 02–12 (abbreviation: J 02–12) and Beijing Earliness 01–88(abbreviation: B 01–88), were used. Both lines are the parents of well-known F1 hybrid of cultivated cabbage (Zhong Gao 11). We made detailed observations on the pollen germination, stigma scretion, pollen growth and development of embryo and endosperm of the two common cabbage self-incompatibility lines. The results are sumarized as follows.
  1. The pollen germination on stigma and stigma scecretion.

In the flower self-pollinating, the two lines had no significant differce. The papillose cells on vast majority of stigma deposited calluse except few stigma. Pollen grains almost did not germinated on the stigma.

The two lines had significant difference in bud inbreedings. The papillose cells on vast majority of stigma of J 02–12 did not deposited calluse. On the contrary, the papillose cells of B 01–88 deposited calluse. The germination of pollen grains on the stigma and the growth of pollen tubes in the style in J 02–12 were more than B 01–88.

The germination of pollen grains and stigma secretion in the crossing J x B involving B 01–88 as a pollen parent was similar to the bud inbreeding of J 01–12 line; the crossing B x J was similar to the bud inbreeding of B 01–88.

  2. The percentage of pollen tubes entering ovules.

Many pollen tubes entered the ovules of the reciprocal crossings and bud inbreedings, but very few pollen tubes entered the ovules of the flower inbreedings.

  3. Embryology

The ovule of Cabbage is campylotropous. Embryo sac is 8-nucleated, of the Polygonum type.

Porogamy. In most cases, about 24–48 hours after pollination, double fertilization occured. The fertilization is of the promitosis type.

About 48–72 hours after pollination, the primary endosperm cell showed first mitosis. The development of the endosperm was of the nuclear type; About 4–5 days after pollination, the zygote divided into 2-cell proembryo. The embryogenesis is of Cruciferous type.
