Abstract:
In this experiment, 16 quality characteristics including the weight, length, width, thickness, shape index, grain number and weight, ratio of grain/pod, strength, water content, dry weight, soluble solid content, chlorophyll, crude fibre, protein and amino acide contents, of the fresh pod of the bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) breeds were evaluated in Heilongjiang Province.
The results are summarized as followings:
- The variation coefficient for such characters as pod weight, shape index, grain weight, grain/pod ratio, soluble solids, chlorophlly, crude protein, sulfur-containing amino acids, glutamic acid, lysine and phenylalanine contents were very high, and their differences among the breeds were significant.
- The fresh bean pods contained important amino acids essential for the human bobys, such as S-AA, Glu, Lys and Phe.
The contents of Met was higer than that of Cystine.
- The shape index and the grains/pod ratio can be used as an index for classification of the beans into grains/eatable type, pod-eatable type and two-purposed type.
- Three varieties of beans with low fibre content, four varieties with high protein content and 4 varieties with high content of important amino acids were obtained and they could be put into direct use for quality breeding and direct uses.
