Abstract:
At the end of 1980s, we successfully cultivated the arid-climated crop-Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo var, cantalupensis) in Southern Rainy China by introducing 'Elizabeth' and its cultivation techniques (1). Presently, the 'Elizabeth' cantaloupe has become a main variety for protected cultivation in the rainy South, However, the further promotion of this technique is challenged by its expensive seed cost and easy crack of frits.
Therefore, we developed the research program in breeding and heterosis utilization of wet-tolerance cantaloupe from 1985 aimed to select a substitute variety (F1) which has higher yield and market value than those of 'Elizabeth'. The results are as follows.
