OPTIMIZING TOMATO PRODUCTION ON STONEWOOL SUBSTRATES WITH A WATER CONTENT STRATEGY

Authors:   A.W. Knop, M. Ouwerling
Keywords:   Rockwool substrate, stonewool, tomato, water content
Abstract:
Tomato plants produced equal yields on stonewool slabs with a constant water content of 40% (V/V) as well as on slabs with a constant water content of 80%. It seems that the plant adjusts to a high or a low water content. A hypothesis that tomato production may be improved by an adjustment of the water content in the stonewool slabs to some specific periods with respect to the growing stage was tested. The results of a first experiment in which the water content was related to the transpiration of the crop showed that tomato gives an optimal growth and production over a wide range of water contents in the root environment.
