EFFECT OF DIFFERENT FORMS OF NITROGEN ON THE QUALITY OF LETTUCE YIELD

Authors:   W. Sady, S. Rozek, J. Myczkowski
Keywords:   nutrient film technique, lettuce, nitrate reductase, nitrate, nitrite, yield, sugars
Abstract:
In 1986–1993, the complex effect of fertilization method, dates of growing and growth regulators on the quality of lettuce cultivated using NFT were investigated. It was found that one could significantly lower nitrate contents in lettuce yield by interaction of growth regulators (GA3 + kinetin) and interruption of NPK nutrition two weeks before the harvest. However, the best method to decrease nitrate contents in lettuce, seemed to be fertilization with reduced nitrogen forms which allowed to obtain a yield of lettuce as high as in the case of the nitrate treatment, characterized by high dry matter and sugar contents.
