SUBSTRATE STUDIES ON PEANUT USING HYDROPONIC CULTURE

Author:   E.S. Lim
Abstract:
A soilless culture system based on the nutrient film technique was adapted for the study. The root zone was separated from the podding zone to determine the effect of various substrates on pod formation. The treatments included four types of substrate, namely sand, sawdust, rice husks, oil palm fruit shells and a treatment using no solid substrate material. The growth and productivity of the plants was influenced by the treatments. For normal pod formation a suitable substrate must be present. The absence of a substrate resulted in excessive vegetative growth, profuse peg formation and small abnormal pods. Among the various substrates studied, sand gave the best pod development.
