THE PENETRATION OF "BIG" FIRMS AND ITS REPERCUSSIONS ON THE FRUIT AND VEGETABLE INDUSTRY

Author:   J.C. Montigaud
Abstract:
This paper tries to give a better understanding of the French fruit and vegetable industry with respect to the penetration of the "big" firms and its consequences. Indeed, as technical progress appears in all sectors, the fruit and vegetable industry offers a field of diversification for its growth rate as well as its chances of profit. This penetration which could take several forms (new establishment, acquisition of firm, financial shareholdings rearranging and merger) mainly affects first and second processing industries; consequently, through the different ways of supply, it affects the farmers. For each type of supply, the consequences on the producer level are analysed. Such complexity creates numerous difficulties when one wishes to apply an economic policy, for according to the different levels of the fruit and vegetable industry, interests often seem to be in contradiction; but by using a "system approach", this could be more easily understood.
