ISHS Acta Horticulturae 40: III Symposium on Horticultural Economics

ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF FLOWER GROWING IN THE NETHERLANDS

Author:   W.G. de Haan
Abstract:
In recent years the consumption as well as the production of flowers has increased considerably. The Netherlands have been showing the fastest growth-rate and have become one of the important (if not the most important) producers in Europe.

This development has been favoured by the method of marketing via auctions. This marketing system enables a specialized production, which is advantageous to the producers as well as to the trade. If open competition in the flower market continues, a further improvement of the position of the Dutch flower industry is expected.

In countries with an effective marketing system, the share of chainstores and supermarkets in the flower market will most probably remain limited.
