THE CONCEPT OF HORTICULTURAL VILLAGES, PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE |

| Abstract:
A form of new-establishment under cooperation is presented as a possibility for increasing the Swedish glasshouseproduction of vegetables. Some theoretical concepts concerning the firm and its possibilities of adaptation to a varying environment are given. A study is then presented, where a horizontal and partial form of integration between several firms, a "horticultural village" has been worked out. Essential economic advantages could be expected in this form of collaboration. The initial investment could be reduced by about 400 000 Sw. crowns in a village of 8 holdings and a total starting area of 20 000 m2. The model study was followed by an empirical study in NW-Scania in the southern part of Sweden. The conclusions from this work indicate that new establishments in so called "4-groups" are preferable with a starting area of 12 000 m2 for vegetable production. The collective arrangements are limited to water facilities, packing and distribution central, personnel room, machinery and stocking room, planning and building activities. The proposal for a collective central boiler has not been accepted. Until now a horticultural village has not been realized in Sweden. Before a "village" can start, there are four main problems to solve, namely physical shape and production, juridical form, location, and financing. The practical impediments to the work with these questions are presented as well as some secondary effects in the pattern of this project. | |
