ISHS Acta Horticulturae 40: III Symposium on Horticultural Economics

SOME LOCATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS OF MUSHROOM GROWING IN NORTHERN IRELAND 1959/1960–1968/1969

Author:   M.C.F. Cook
Abstract:
Over the period reviewed, the paper shows that: (a) there was a change in location of the main area of production from 3 coastal counties to 2 inland counties; (b) this change in location constituted a move towards closer proximity to the main source of compost raw material, but a shift away from the principal Northern Ireland sea ports and marketing centres in Great Britain; (c) the development of the new main location of production was associated with a significant increase in the numbers of producers and production from farm-type holdings, a period of static farm incomes and the development of improved marketing and transport services; (d) in the 2 inland counties the proportion of total production from specialist mushroom holdings declined from 90% to 45%, while in the 3 coastal counties the level remained constant at 90%.
