| Abstract:
Seasonal restrictions in the fruit and vegetable processing industries result in economic losses to growers and processors. A new concept in processing technology was developed, through integrated market research and food engineering programs, to defer final product processing and eliminate seasonal related inefficiences in processing plants. The concept of bulk storage processing is comprised of holding large units of semi-processed product under tankage storage conditions that prevent spoilage and decomposition. Technological feasibility was realized in 1970. Economic feasibility studies indicate significant economic savings from implementation of the technology and that implementation will result in major changes in market structure, organization and performance throughout the fruit and vegetable processing industries. | |
