| Abstract:
The paper investigates the movement from producer to consumer of the primary salad crops, tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers in the two counties Lancashire and Yorkshire in Northern England. Both home-produced and imported produce is considered, and the manner of distribution through cooperatives, wholesale markets and marketing organisations studied. The involvement of retail supermarket chains with their own distribution networks and buying procedures is discussed, and a comparison of the scale of their operation at the present time with that of salad retailers as a whole is made. | |
