METHODS AND RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS ON THE EFFECTS OF THE CO₂ CONCENTRATION ON VEGETABLE CROPS

Abstract:
CO₂ application can already be considered as common practice for plants growing under glass. According to the general impression it has proved successful and has shown that it can have striking effects. But we as horticultural scientists must confess: there is success, but its scientific basis is really limited. In this connection I would like to remind you of 2 things.

Isn't it a fact that we are able to give only a poor answer concerning the optimal concentration of CO₂ for dry matter production by plants?
Consequently there are scarcely more than incidental hints on associated developmental changes.

Due to the nature of its investigations, pure plant physiology may give us some information but it does not meet our real needs and is not likely to do in the future. We are compelled to do our own research, needing different facilities to those required by pure plant physiologists.
