ISHS Acta Horticulturae 4: Symposium on Vegetable Growing under Glass

TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS OF THE YOUNG TOMATO PLANT

Author:   A. Calvert
Abstract:
Before dealing with the subject in detail it is first necessary to define the term "young tomato plant". In this paper I shall discuss growth and development from the end of the germination process to anthesis of the first inflorescence only.

The importance of obtaining a clear understanding of how the first inflorescence develops and the factors which influence the production or non-production of flowers and fruit in sub-optimal light conditions will be obvious to all. I therefore propose to discuss what I consider to be the most significant responses to temperature under two main headings.

1 Flower initiation and Development, and 2 Vegetative growth.
