ISHS Acta Horticulturae 4: Symposium on Vegetable Growing under Glass

RAISING YOUNG TOMATOPLANTS WITH SOIL WARMING AND SUPPLEMENTARY LIGHT

Author:   A.E. Canham
Abstract:
At no time in the history of horticulture has the importance of environmental factors been more readily appreciated than it is at the present day. New techniques enable better control to be achieved over these factors and the current economic climate necessitates their use to the full. This in turn calls for a thorough understanding of the effects not only of these factors themselves but of their interactions with others. This has led to a considerable amount of research on the plant's reaction to various factors, but all too often these are studied in isolation. It is during the early weeks of a plant's life that the foundation is laid on which its future performance depends, and this can be greatly influenced by environmental conditions during this time. It is during this period too that the greatest control can be exercised most economically.
