GREENHOUSE COOLING IN SUBTROPICAL REGIONS

Author:   W. FANG
Keywords:   greenhouse cooling, subtropical regions, systematic approach
Abstract:
The purposes of this paper are twofold: First, to describe the current practices of greenhouse ventilation and cooling in Taiwan. Many types of structures and methods have been studied to find the best combinations for natural and forced ventilation. Continuous side opening, ridge vent and tall building are some basic conclusions. Different types of evaporative cooling systems were installed and studied. Some growers use refrigeration system in greenhouse and still make profit. If low cost energy is available, the absorption cycle is utilized instead of compression cycle in a refrigeration system. The utilization of solar energy as the regenerative energy sources for the wet type dehumidification methods was also applied. Exterior shading is normally a must and is utilized in combination with other cooling means. The second purpose of this paper is to describe a systematic approach in planning the cooling system. The approach considered the budget available, local agro-climate, facilities utilized, the crops grow and the potential benefits due to the application of the cooling facilities.
