ISHS Acta Horticulturae 398: Postharvest Physiology of Fruits

CHALLENGES IN FUTURE POSTHARVEST RESEARCH

Author:   A.E. Watada
Keywords:   Quality, Volatiles, Vitamins, Hydrolyzing enzymes, Climacteric, Nonclimacteric
Abstract:
Challenges in the future postharvest research will be at the cellular and molecular level. Descriptive information will be needed in some areas of research before data generated at the molecular level can be utilized. Data on physical processes need to accompany biochemical and molecular data to better understand physiological phenomena. Molecular level research needs to be expanded to nonclimacteric tissues. As postharvest phenomena is better understood, calcium, high temperature and controlled atmosphere treatments can be utilized more effectively.
