GROWTH BEHAVIOR AND FLOWER FORMATION OF CALANTHE DISCOLOR LINDL.

Abstract:
Growth behavior of Calanthe discolor Lindl. was investigated, especially in relation to the cycle of vegetative growth and flowering. Growth of the plant started in late June with bud initiation in the axils of the upper three sheath primordia of the middle of three vegetative axillary buds of the flowering shoot. As the middle axillary bud developed into the next flowering shoot, the other ones became dormant. The bud primordia differentiated about six sheath primordia from late June through early November and, thereafter were inactive until the next season.

After flower season in early May, the bud primordia developed to the next axillary buds. The middle one of them initiated about five leaf primordia at shoot apex, bud primordia in the axils of the upper three sheath primordia and an inflorescence in the axil of the lowest leaf primordium in late June to early July, and developed into the next flowering shoot, through the upper and lower ones remained in dormancy after initiation of three to four leaf primordia. Thus the plant grew and developed in the two-year-cycle.
