| Abstract:
The Programme Committee of the 24th International Horticultural Congress in Kyoto decided to organize several Symposia during the Congress. One of these Symposia was titled New Ornamental Crops and the Market for Floricultural Products. Five invited speakers presented a paper during this half day Symposium in which they explained the development of new ornamental crops in their continent. Besides these papers, other papers within the theme of this Symposium were also presented orally or by poster. On the basis of the title and the summary submitted before the Congress, a number of these papers were selected and the authors were asked to deliver their manuscript for publication within this Acta. As it is difficult to judge only on the basis of a short summary, we discovered afterwards that not all the selected papers are covered by the theme. As all authors have been asked to submit their papers for publication in advance, it was difficult for the editors to refuse them later or to change them too much. The question may arise why this Symposium was organized between two regular symposia on new ornamental crops. In 1991 in Baltimore, USA and the next one which is projected in 1996 in Perth, Australia. The simple answer to this question is that there is a big interest in new floricultural crops in all countries where there is a floricultural industry. The number of audients during the Symposium in Kyoto was reflecting this interest. The content of this Acta presents you many, very informative papers about developing and testing new ornamental crops.
We have to realize that what is new in one country can already be very common in another.
The world market as well the local market for floricultural products can be enlarged and the flower and potplant consumption stimulated by the introduction of new crops of a high quality. | |
