Abstract:
A number of empirical models were developed for predicting the uptake of water and macronutrients in NFT-grown melons.
The models were based on environmental factors, plant age (expressed as growing degree days), water absorption as well as the uptake rate of a 'reference' ion (nitrate or potassium) which could be routinely determined by means of ion-selective sensors.
The models were generally conservative in the sense that predicted values were less extreme than the observed ones and the residuals were correlated with the observations.
The rate of water uptake was the input variable which accounted for most of the variance in the observed macronutrient uptake; adding the uptake of 'reference' ion improved slightly the model fit only for nitrate and potassium.
