CHANGES OF MINERAL CONCENTRATIONS IN PLANT SAP DURING THE GROWTH PERIOD OF MUSKMELONS GROWN IN ROCKWOOL

Abstract:
Muskmelons were grown at 3 concentrations, 2, 1 and ½ unit, of Japanese standard "Enshi" nutrient solution in rockwool culture in order to clarify changes of mineral nutritional concentrations in plant (petiole) sap. The order of NO3-N, P and K concentrations in plant sap at all stages was 2 > 1 > ½ unit. Above all, the P concentrations was markedly lower at ½ unit. However, the differences of the concentrations were extremely smaller than those of nutrient solution applied. On the other hand, the order of Ca and Mg content was ½ > 1 > 2 unit. The fruit quality was best at 1 unit and worst at ½ unit. As the result, in case of the deficiency of muskmelons, especially in P, it may be possible to apply plant sap analysis to the diagnosis. However, it may not be appropriate to diagnose the other nutritional status by plant sap analysis.
