ISHS Acta Horticulturae 396: Hydroponics and Transplant Production

PREFACE

Author:   T. Ito
Abstract:
The XXIVth International Horticultural Congress was held at Kyoto International Conference Hall in Kyoto Japan during 21–27 August 1994. Twelve symposia were organized to revitalized the Congress. One of these symposia was titled transplant Production and Hydroponics, and five invited speakers presented their enlighted papers. In addition to the symposia, there were many oral and poster presentations related to this theme. Among them, a number of papers were selected for the publication of this Acta on the basis of the summary submitted before the Congress.

This Acta involves papers of horticultural, ecological and plant nutritional aspects of hydroponics and transplant production, including five invited papers. Hydroponics is now considered as one of the superior growing techniques for a sustainable agriculture, freed from environmental pollution. Transplant production, on the other hands, is one of the important solution measures to overcome the shortage of farm labor population. These two topics are highly requested by the present social needs, although these techniques have no direct relations except for the similarity in nutritional management and growing medium.

The great acknowledgement should be payed to The Organizing Committee of the Congress and The Chairman Prof. Masatoshi Iwata for his unlimited and useful contribution to this Acta. Special thanks are given to Prof. Franco Tognoni who shared the responsibility of the coordinator of the symposium. Many thanks go to Prof. Franco Tognoni, Prof. Takakazu Namiki, Dr. Akira Nukaya and Mr. Toru Maruo for their performing the tedious works as the editor. Considerable thanks are due to Ms. Atsuko Sunahara, Congress Co. Ltd., for her hearty tasks to this publication. Thanks also payed to the students of Dept. Vege. Sci. for printing hard copies of each author from their floppy disks.
