ISHS Acta Horticulturae 395: Dormancy and the related Problems of Deciduous Fruit Trees

ECO-PHYSIOLOGICAL STUDIES IN THE ANALYSIS OF DORMANCY IN STRAWBERRY

Authors:   Jesus R. Aspuria, Y. Fujime
Keywords:   Strawberry, Dormancy, Flower bud initiation, SEM, Multiple regression
Abstract:
The relationships between environmental factors and vegetative/reproductive growth were studied on four Junebearing cultivars of strawberry. Floral development was classified into 7 stages. The first signs of the onset of dormancy were a decrease in the ratio between dry weight of top parts to roots (T/R ratio) and increase in root dry weight, followed by a decrease in petiole length. In contrast, the indications of full dormancy break were an increase in petiole length, followed by an increase in T/R ratio and a decrease in root dry weight. Using five environmental factors and number of days to dormancy, the best fitting model gave a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.851.
