Abstract:
Brazil imports approximately 90.000 t of pears annually. Expansion of domestic pear production has been limited due to lack of cultivars and information on rootstock suitability. There is good potential for production of Pyrus communis L. and P. pyrifolia Burn (NAK), as well as hybrids of both, in the highlands of Southern Brazil. Pear production in this region is limited by a high level of flower bud abortion. The future of the Brazilian pear industry depends upon solving this problem. This study presents data on time of flower abortion of five Asiatic and European type pear cultivars during a three year period and discusses the possible causes of flower abortion.
