Abstract:
To learn more about the presence and possible role of gibberellins during the early stages of fruit development, gibberellins from Golden Delicious and Rome Beauty apple seeds were estimated by lettuce hypocotyl bioassay and detected by GC-MS. Apple seed gibberellin-like activity peaked about 10 weeks after full bloom and Golden Delicious seeds showed higher gibberellin activity than those from Rome Beauty.
GC-MS analysis detected gibberellins A4, A7, A12 and A20 in 8–10 week-old seeds of both cultivars.
These results suggest that there are qualitative as well as quantitative aspects to the role of endogenous gibberellins in apple fruit development.
