Abstract:
The effects of benzyladenine (BA) application on stimulation for spear sprouting of Asparagus officinalis and on endogenous level of abscisic acid (ABA) in spear tips were studied.
Single BA foliar application in fall promoted spear sprouting after the application and enhanced thickness of spears.
However, the effect was not observed in the following spring.
The BA direct application to young spears in spring also promoted spear sprouting after the application although an effect on thickness of new spears was not observed.
The effects of successive year BA foliar application each fall for three years were almost the same as those of single year applications.
The effect on stimulation of spear sprouting was only observed just after the application, but not in the following seasons.
No significant influence on growth of crowns was observed following successive application.
BA application caused a drastic decrease of endogenous ABA levels in spear tips within 12 hr after the application.
