Abstract:
We examined the effects of synthetic cytokinins (BA, kinetin, CPPU) on fruit set and parthenocarpy of four watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Matsum) cultivars.
Application of CPPU to the ovary at anthsis dramatically increased set and induced parthenocarpy of ad cultivars examined.
Application of BA remarkably promoted fruit set of pollinated flowers but did not induce parthenocarpy.
Kinetin had few effects on fruit set and parthenocarpy.
Sugar content(Brix) of parthenocarpic fruit produced by CPPU treatment was about the same as in control (pollinated) fruit.
Concerning specific sugars, fructose content was higher than glucose and sucrose at harvest time.
As with Brix, there was no relationship CPPU application.
CPPU treatment may be a practical way to promote fruit-set and seedless fruit production without affecting fruit size and internal quality of watermelon.
