Abstract:
Production of Sultanina (Thompson Seedless) table grapes in Chile usually involves early season split applications of gibberellic acid (GA3) (at 4 mm fruit diameter and one week later) to improve berry size.
CPPU, a cytokinin-type bioregulator used alone or in combination with GA3 at the same timing, also improved berry size in experiments conducted over 4 years.
CPPU - treated berries were rounder and clusters were much tighter.
An important part of the growth increment caused by CPPU appeared shortly before harvest.
Berry thinning may be required to maximize the growth increment and prevent excessive cluster compactation.
CPPU treatment also resulted in lower juice soluble solids and greener berry colour at the time of normal harvest.
Rachis and pedicel thickness and weight were increased.
Satisfactory results were obtained when GA3 plus CPPU was applied twice at doses as low as 20 mg/l GA3 and 5 mg/l CPPU. Delaying harvest 7 to 21 days maximized the CPPU effect on fruit size without loss of fruit quality.
