HARDY ORCHIDS: SYMBIOTIC IN VITRO PROPAGATION AND CULTIVATION

Author:   Bo I. Jørgensen
Keywords:   Dactylorhiza sp, Orchidaceae, orchid mycorrhiza, symbiotic micropropagation, seedling development
Abstract:
Protocorms of Dactylorhiza majalis were grown with six strains of mycorrhizal fungi in vitro in order to investigate the influence of different fungi on plant development. It was found that the fungi influenced not only the growth rate but also organogenesis. The choice of fungi affected the probability for shoot formation after vernalization, as well as the appearance and shape of the protocorms. The question of symbiotic versus asymbiotic propagation are being discussed.
