Abstract:
Genomic and cDNA sequences of the mitochondrial atp9 gene from an apple cultivar 'Delicious' were determined.
Our data reveal that the mRNA for apple atp9 is edited in eight positions.
Seven of these editing sites result in amino acid changes and one introduces a stop codon which eliminates eight carboxy-terminal residues, compared to the genomic sequence.
Apple atp9 thus encodes a predicted 74-residue polypeptide with a molecular weight of 7.6 kDa.
The exons a and b of nad5 gene were found downstream of the atp9 gene, and the atp9 and nad5 sequences were shown to be co-transcribed.
