Abstract:
Protoplast fusion is a tool which can be used for the transfer of cytoplasmic male sterility from one species to another in a single step when it is possible to regenerate plants from protoplasts at a sufficient frequency. Successful examples illustrating such transfers exist for the genera Brassica, Cichorium, Lycopersicon. Cytoplasmic male-sterility is generally considered now as a trait encoded by the mitochondrial genome. Mitochondrial recombination occurring after protoplast fusion is of practical interest by allowing the elimination of unfavourable traits resulting from nuclear-cytoplasmic incompatibilities following inter-specific hybridizations.
