SUPERVISED WORK EXPERIENCE AS A CORE REQUIREMENT IN UNDERGRADUATE AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE CURRICULA

Author:   N. Vincent
Keywords:   Agricultural curriculum, Agricultural education, Experiential education, Internships, Work-study program
Abstract:
The 24-week work experience program involves the securing of a meaningful work experience(s), job approval, visitations, student and employer reports, student tracking and grading. These responsibilities are shared among the student's department chairperson, Office of Career Services, and the student.

Data collected from employers, students, program administrators and alumni indicate a high degree of satisfaction with the employment program. Students cite career exploration, relevant work experience, enhanced resume and improved practical knowledge as valuable components of the program. Alumni and employers were emphatic that good, relevant work experience is a competitive edge and a valuable asset in securing the first job after graduation.

The coordination of multiple activities, volume of paperwork, time and budget constraints, student demographics, etc. contribute to the challenges innate in this program. The College's agricultural constituencies strongly support the employment program experience as an important component of the student's education.
