FRESH MARKET TOMATO CHARACTERISTICS PREFERRED BY SUPERMARKET PRODUCE BUYERS

Abstract:
A survey of produce buyers for retail supermarkets in New Jersey revealed that they believe that consumer demand for fresh tomatoes grown in New Jersey has increased. A majority also said that their own opinion of the quality of New Jersey tomatoes has increased in recent years. Most respondents believed that shelf life and uniformity of New Jersey tomatoes were worse than other tomatoes. Over 50% of respondents identified shelf life and appearance as very important attributes affecting their decision to purchase New Jersey tomatoes which may explain why 14% of the buyers did not carry New Jersey tomatoes and only 21% of the tomatoes sold in respondents' retail stores were grown in New Jersey.
