TRENDS IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION ON THE APPLE MARKET: A COMPARISON BETWEEN SWEDEN AND THE UNITED KINGDOM

Authors:   K.W. Bladh, L.E. Axelson
Keywords:   The UK, Sweden, Apple domestic market shares, Apple imports, Apple production, Marketing strategies
Abstract:
The world trade in apples is subject to various kinds of restrictions. Fruit from the southern hemisphere competes with domestic production on the European market. Increased economic integration in Europe puts pressure on the Swedish producers. What can they learn from the British experience of increased international competition in Europe? It is argued that the British producers have improved their quality control and tried to cooperate with the supermarkets. This paper deals with the development in competitiveness of domestic products versus imports on the Swedish and British markets. Different marketing strategies are discussed, in hope that the paper will bring about increased knowledge concerning the function of the market for apples. This paper is part of a research project starting 1993 and finishing 1996 on conflicts in the marketing chain.
