GROWTH RESPONSE TO FERTILISATION OF SWEET BASIL (OCIMUM BASILICUM L.)

Authors:   R. Tesi, G. Chisci, A. Nencini, R. Tallarico
Abstract:
The influence of fertilization on the growth of sweet basil was investigated considering different doses, nutrient ratios and nitrogen forms.

To this aim, three subsequent experiments were carried out in heated greenhouses on "Genovese" cultivar sown in plastic containers filled with peat mix substrate and water supplied by subirrigation.

The results have shown that increasing concentration of a 20–20–20 soluble fertilizer (1–5 g/l) reduced the rate of growth, the optimum concentration resulting 1 g/l. Therefore the sweet basil has demonstrated very sensitive to high fertilizer concentration.

The application of different ratios of N, P2O5, K2O has shown that 1:1:2 ratio give the best growth result in comparison with 1:1:1 and 1:0.25:1.5 ratios.

Different forms of nitrogen (nitric and ammoniacal) do not influence the fresh weight of plants, although ammonium sulphate has increased the plant height, and calcium nitrate promoted higher nitrate accumulation in the leaves.
