Abstract:
The ISHS Section on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants met during the XXIV International Horticultural Congress in Kyoto, Japan, from 21–27th August 1994. This was the first time that the ISHS has held a congress in Asia.
Participants at the Section's Symposium came from all continents except South America.
During the Workshop meeting, creative discussion, exchange of novel ideas and suggestions for the future cooperation were voiced.
Many stimulating and important papers were presented in both oral and poster formats, mainly in the area of agronomical and phytochemical investigations, tissue culture and biotechnology.
Some papers focused on the introduction and developments of little known plants with medicinal and other commercial potential and the introduction of plants with known potential into new environments.
The majority of presentations of the Symposium are published in this volume.
We express thanks to all the contributors and we hope that this volume will be of interest to all our colleagues who were not able to travel the considerable distance to Japan.
Due to the extremely wide diversity of medicinal and aromatic plants, they represent a very variable range of types, environments, uses, and consequently problems connected both with research and applied development.
It is important to bring academic and industrial groups together and coordinate future collaborative research.
We hope that the content of this volume will provide valuable information to scientists and professional workers in this field.
The editors are most appreciative of the efforts of Professor Kiyoshi Ohkawa and his programme committee and that of the Japanese Editorial Board for their initial activities in screening papers.
We also acknowledge the contribution of Professor Peter Tetenyi of Hungary and Professor T. Takano of Japan in convening various aspects of the symposium.
Other valuable contributions were made by Mr.
J. Van Assche and his staff in the ISHS Secretariat, Leuven, Belgium in organising the publication of this Acta.
