ISHS Acta Horticulturae 39: Symposium on Basic Problems of Protected Vegetable Production

THE INFLUENCE OF THE ROOT SPACE TEMPERATURE ON THE GROWTH OF YOUNG CUCUMBERS

Author:   E. Fölster
Abstract:
A special experiment arrangement for cultivating young cucumber plants by different root space and glasshouse temperatures and equal nutrient supply are described.

In the given conditions the solution temperature of 16°C was a minimum for the development of the cucumber plants. The root temperature of 25°C in both glasshouse conditions was in most cases the best. Raising the air temperature from 20°C to 25° Cin all series gave a higher substance production of nearly 50%. Low temperatures gave a higher procentual dry matter content and a higher part of root weight. The root volume per g shoot dry matter was lower as the growth conditions were more favourable. The higher the root and air temperature, the more unfavourable the Mg-content of the cucumber plants got.
