RESPONSES OF PHASEOLUS VULGARIS TO TEMPERATURE IN GROWTH CABINETS AND THE FIELD

Abstract:
Results from a series of field experiments suggested that bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plants from early sowings were smaller, at emergence than were plants from late sowings. This effect was confirmed in experiments in controlled environments where it was shown to be due to an effect of low temperature during germination and early growth.

In a second series of experiments, seedlings of 346 lines of Phaseolus vulgaris were screened for the ability to grow at low temperature. performance of 64 selected lines was later tested in the field. The predictive value of the cabinet test was low. Some reasons, which include the possibility of interactions between genotype and test environment, are considered.
