Abstract:
The effect of graft combinations on vegetative activity and productive behaviour in Vitis vinifera L., cvs 'Trebbiano toscano' and 'Chardonnay', both own rooted and grafted on Kober 5BB and 1103 Paulsen, was studied for three years.
'Chardonnay' showed earlier budbreak, flowering and ripening than 'Trebbiano toscano', while the graft combinations showed significant differences only in 'Trebbiano toscano', where own rooted vines were earlier than the other combinations.
In general 'Chardonnay' vines were more vigorous than those of 'Trebbiano toscano' and less influenced by the graft combination.
In own rooted vines of 'Trebbiano toscano' vegetative activity was significantly reduced in comparison to those grafted on K5BB and 1103P. Yield in 'Trebbiano toscano' was directly correlated with graft combinations vigor.
Own rooted vines of 'Chardonnay' showed a faster decrease in titratable acidity during the warmer summer.
The lower productive performance of own rooted vines could be due to stress induced by the presence of Phyllossera insects on the roots.
