ISHS Acta Horticulturae 388: International Symposium on Viticulture and Enology

FOREWORD

Authors:   F. Pérez-Camacho, M. Carnicer
Abstract:
Spain occupies the first place among all countries, according to the number of ha. of vineyard. Approximately 1.4 million of ha. represents 15% of total vineyard surface in the world. Is a very ancient cultivation mainly in mediterranean countries.

In general, world grape-growing areas are using ancient materials. Most of varieties have an unknown origin, but in the last years, in several countries, new grape varieties are obtained. Generally to be used as table grape.

On the other hand since the end of XIX century, the use of filoxera-resistant rootstocks, is necessary to cultivate. New grapevine rootstock are appearing with new and very interesting characteristics.

As viticulturists know, new cultivars are not only interesting but necessary to ensure the future of grape culture. It is because that we have dedicated this symposium to these topics.

The main purpose of this International Symposium on grape growing, jointly organized by the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), is to indicate a regularly schedulesd forum that facilitates and help scientific interchanges on this crop.

This volume of Acta Horticulturae contains 2 invited and contributed papers for viticulture and for enology, presented in Córdoba (Spain).

Some of the papers announced in the Symposium program are not published here because they are not finally presented or their authors did not submit manuscripts. Other papers are neither included due to important shortcomings on Acta requirements.

Thus the editors have had to retype some papers and redraw some of the figures. The time to meet this task has delayed the issue of the book.

The editors and the organizers wish finally to aknowledge the contribution of all who have contributed to the success of this Symposium specially the Dirección general de Agricultura of the Andalucía Government, the University of Córdoba and the Diputación Provincial of Córdoba for the printing of this issue of Acta Horticulturae
