ISHS Acta Horticulturae 386: XVI International Symposium on Fruit Tree Virus diseases

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN PLANT VIRUSES DETECTION

Author:   T. Candresse
Abstract:
The variety of techniques that have been developed for the detection of pathogenic plant viruses includes:
  • indexing on herbaceous or woody host plants.
  • direct observation of the viral pathogen by electron microscopy, sometimes coupled with serological techniques as in immunoelectron-microscopy.
  • direct observation of viral double stranded RNAs following gel electrophoresis.
  • use of serological techniques (ELISA…)
  • detection of the viral genome using molecular hybridization technology
  • detection of the viral genome using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology.

In essentially each of these fields, recent years have seen the advent of new technologies allowing easier and more sensitive detection of viral pathogens. This is especially true for serological and molecular (hybridization, PCR) detection techniques.
