Abstract:
During a study conducted in the Pyrénées-Orientales to investigate the susceptibility of Rouge du Roussillon apricot cultivar to the apricot chlorotic leaf roll phytoplasma disease (ACLR), we located some trees with atypical symptoms:
- in summer, mild chlorosis, partial rolling of leaves, and veins seemed jutting.
Vegetation is prolonged in autumn.
Fruit number of superior size is reduced.
No decline of the trees,
- in winter, swollen bark and bud burst were delayed from 6 to 8 days.
The nursery indexing permitted to reproduce similar symptoms on the apricot indicator Priana.
On peach seedling GF 305 in greenhouse, the reactions were very specific 100 to 120 days after indexing:
- gradual chlorosis with atrophy of young leaves, vein clearing, then reddening and rolling of oldest leaves.
The re-growth shows a weeping characteristic symptom because the wood is rubbery and badly lignified.
No necrosis, gurmmosis or decline such as the inoculation with ACLR. The exmination by DAPI test of GF 305 petioles and young shoots permitted to locate phytoplasma, comparable to those of ACLR in the phloem.
However, it is probably a distinct new disease, temporarily called peach vein clearing (PVC), which is natually transmitted in orchard.
